A Research Partner in Hungary

For genealogy firms, professional researchers and immigration practices with Hungarian cases.

The problem these cases present

You know the pattern. A client’s line runs cleanly back through American records and then stops at the Atlantic. What follows is a country whose borders moved, registers kept by parish rather than by surname, archives in six successor states, and correspondence that has to be conducted in Hungarian.

Some of it is online. Much of it is not, and the indexes that exist are uneven. The work is doable — but not remotely, and not from a database subscription.

I handle that part of your cases.

What I take on

  • Place of origin — identifying the village behind a garbled or obsolete name, and establishing which parish and which archive it belongs to today
  • Parish and civil register research — tracing a line generation by generation in the original books
  • Document retrieval — certified copies and archival extracts, including records needed for citizenship files
  • Successor-state archives — Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia and Austria, where so much of the material now sits
  • Negative findings in writing — a documented account of what was searched and what was not there, in a form you can put in a file

How we work

White label. The work is delivered to you. Your client is your client, and my name appears only where you want it to.

No client contact. I do not approach, solicit or accept work from your clients, during an engagement or afterwards. If a client contacts me directly, I refer them back to you.

Confidential. Case material stays between us. I am happy to sign your confidentiality or subcontractor agreement rather than ask you to sign mine.

In your format. Report, source citations, transcription, document scans — whatever your file requires. Tell me the format once and I will keep to it.

Honest scoping. Before a case starts I tell you what I expect to find, what is likely to be a dead end, and where the cost is unpredictable. I would rather decline a case than bill against a wall.

Rates

Hourly — 45 EUR, billed in half-hour increments, with an agreed cap on every engagement. No work beyond the cap without your approval.

Fixed-fee options where the scope allows:

  • Place of origin identification — 125 EUR
  • Single document retrieval — from 95 EUR
  • Multi-generation document package — from 450 EUR

Archive fees, certified copies and postage are charged at cost and itemised.

For firms sending work regularly, I am open to agreeing standing terms.

Turnaround

Digitised collections: a few days. Records requiring correspondence with an archive: typically three to eight weeks, depending on the institution. On-site work is scheduled case by case.

I give a realistic estimate before accepting a case, and I tell you promptly when an archive is slow rather than letting a deadline pass in silence.

To start a case

Send what you have: the ancestor’s name and approximate dates, any place name however distorted, the religion if known, and the American or Canadian records already in the file. A short note on what the client actually needs is more useful than a full file.

I will reply with an assessment of what is workable, what it will take, and what it will cost — before any work begins.
